Novels about adoptions which go wrong are always heart-wrenching, but best-selling suspense writer C. J. Box adds another harrowing twist to his story. Jack and Melissa McGuane live in Denver and are the proud parents of an adopted nine-month old girl whom they have raised from birth. The birth mother, an unwed teenager, signed the adoption forms but, as the father was unknown, could not contact him to sign away his parental rights. Now the horrified parents learn that the father, the son of a powerful local judge, has turned up and wants his child back. A twisted tale of intimidation, corruption and blackmail makes for an irresistible read.
